Kata Idul Adha artinya kembali kepada semangat berkurban. Berbeda dengan Idul Fitri yang artinya kembali kepada fitrah. Bila Idul Fitri berkaitan dengan ibadah Ramadhan, di mana setiap hamba Allah selama Ramadhan benar-benar disucikan sehingga mencapai titik fitrah yang suci, tetapi dalam Idul Adha tidak demikian. Idul Adha lebih berupa kesadaran sejarah akan kehambaan yang dicapai nabi Ibrahim dan nabi Ismail alaihimus salam.
