Jaringan : jaringan (network) adalah kumpulan dua atau lebih sistem komputer yang terhubung. Terdapat banyak jenis jaringan komputer:
a. local-area network (LAN): komputer yang terhubung berada pada tempat yang berdekatan secara gografis (misalkan satu gedung).
b. wide-area network (WAN): komputer yang terhubung berada pada tempat yang berjauhan dan dihubungkan dengan line telepon atau gelombang radio. selain itu, jaringan komputer dapat juga dikelompokan berdasar kriteria di bawah ini:
a. topologi: pengaturan keterhubungan antar sistem komputer. Terdapat bermacam-macam topologi seperti bus, star, dan ring.
b. protokol: protokol mendefinisikan sekelompok aturan dan sinyal yang digunakan oleh komputer pada jaringan untuk berkomunikasi. Protokol LAN yang paling populer adalah Ethernet. Protokol LAN lain yang banyak digunakan adalah IBM token-ring network.

Dewasa ini peranan teknologi pengolahan basisdata sangatlah menonjol. Basisdata memiliki peranan sentral dalam sistem informasi. Mengingat peranannya yang cukup besar, banyak sistem basisdata ditawarkan. Salah satunya adalah MySQL. Sistem basisdata MySQL didukung oleh bahasa operasional SQL. SQL singkatan dari Structured Query Language. SQL merupakan bahasa query standar yang digunakan untuk mengakses basisdata relasional.

Kemampuan SQL tidak hanya untuk query (memperoleh data) saja, tetapi juga mencakup kemampuan lain, seperti pendefinisian struktur data, pengubahan data, pengaturan sekuritas, dan lain-lain. SQL belum dapat dikatakan sebagai bahasa tetapi sebagai subbahasa. Hal ini karena SQL tidak mendukung persyaratan bahasa yang lengkap seperti pernyataan penguji kondisi dan pengulangan atau iterasi. Sebagai subbahasa, SQL memiliki beberapa perintah atau pernyataan untuk melakukan fungsi-fungsinya. Tabel 2.2 menunjukkan pernyataan-pernyataan dasar SQL.

PHP merupakan singkatan dari PHP Hypertext Preprocessor yang merupakan bahasa berbentuk skrip yang ditempatkan pada server dan diproses di server. Hasilnya kemudian dikirimkan ke browser klien. Secara khusus, PHP dirancang untuk membentuk website dinamis. Misalnya, Anda dapat menampilkan isi basisdata ke halaman website. Pada prinsipnya, PHP memiliki fungsi yang sama dengan skrip-skrip seperti ASP (Active Server Page), Cold Fusion, ataupun Perl.

Kelahiran PHP bermula saat Rasmus Lerdorf membuat sejumlah skrip Perl yang dapat mengamati siapa saja yang melihat-lihat daftar riwayat hidupnya, yakni pada tahun 1994. Skrip-skrip ini selanjutnya dikemas menjadi tool yang disebut “Personal Home Page“. Paket inilah yang menjadi cikal bakal PHP. Pada tahun 1995, Rasmus menciptakan PHP/FI Versi 2. Pada versi inilah pemrograman dapat menempelkan kode terstruktur di dalam tag HTML. Kode PHP juga dapat berkomunikasi dengan basisdata dan melakukan perhitungan-perhitungan yang kompleks.

Pada saat ini PHP cukup populer sebagai piranti pemrograman website, terutama di lingkungan Linux. Walaupun demikian, PHP sebenarnya juga dapat berfungsi pada server-server yang berbasis UNIX, Windows NT, dan Macintosh. Bahkan versi untuk Windows 95/98 pun tersedia. Pada awalnya, PHP dirancang untuk diintegrasikan dengan web server Apache. Namun, belakangan PHP juga dapat bekerja dengan web server seperti PWS (Personal Web Server), IIS (Internet Information Server), dan Xitami.

PHP merupakan perangkat lunak bebas atau gratis sehingga untuk menggunakannya tidak perlu membayar ataupun membeli. PHP dapat diunduh melalui website www.php.net. Pada versi yang digunakan pada Windows, dapat diperoleh kode binernya, dan pada versi Linux dapat memperoleh kode sumbernya secara lengkap.

Skrip PHP berkedudukan sebagai tag dalam bahasa HTML. Sebagaimana diketahui, HTML (HyperText Markup Language) merupakan bahasa standar untuk membuat halaman-halaman website
